Case study

Prime-brokerage function buildouts.

Emerald has helped multiple firms build or expand prime-brokerage-related functions. The useful story is how the role changes from seat to seat: financing, clearing, stock loan, client service, risk, operations, and relationship management.

A buildout is not one empty chair

Standing up a function is a different search from filling one seat that already has a job description. Scope, sequencing, and which seat has to exist first all change who belongs on the slate. A buildout that pretends every hire is the same profile interviews a pile of adjacent people.

Emerald starts by separating the seats the firm is actually building, then maps each one. Candidates are screened for that work, not for the words “prime brokerage” on a résumé.

The seats stay separate

Financing, clearing, stock loan, client service, risk, operations, and relationship management are different jobs inside the same broad function. Risk here is its own seat. It is not a footnote on a coverage hire, and it is not product control under another name.

The relationship manager is the coverage seat. Emerald keeps it distinct from financing, stock loan, margin, collateral, clearing, and operations, and does not hire it as generic sales. Collateral management and margin are different seats as well. The intake has to say which work the hire will own. Collapsing them into one profile is a specification error, not a sourcing shortcut.

This page does not name the firms, count them past “multiple,” or say which seats were filled where. Compensation stays off it.
